FEATURED WINES

Villanyi Franc_new label-01.jpg

We are proud to present our VillÁnyi Franc

Our Villányi Franc vintages 2016 and 2017 were won gold medals in the National Wine Competitions and International competitions 2019 - 2023

The Classification Process

Villány origin wines are categorized and approved by the Villány Wine Region wine selection committee. They taste and decide the given category for each wine: Classicus, Premium or Super Premium. The Super Premium category is only given to Cabernet Franc wines as this is the flagship grape for the Villány Region.

Wines have to pass other requirements to obtain the right to use the Villány Certificate of Origin. First, all grapes have to be grown in the Villány Region. Secondly, Premium and Super Premium wines have strict limits for the maximum amount of grapes/ha. This is normally decided during the spring pruning: You can prune for a higher quality premium (fewer grapes/vine) or a higher quantity (classicus) wine. With these considerations, the committee then decides the category based on a blind tasting.

If the wine passes the tasting and other requirements to use the Villány Certificate of Origin, it is then sent to Nebih (National Food Chain Safety Office) who oversee the quality control of the wines and wine making processes in Hungary. They provide the final approval for the wine entering the market.

2023 harvest

2023 was a challenging year with a very rainy spring and early summer, followed by a hot and dry period. Peronospora was also taking its toll on the grapes. Nevertheless, while some of the grapes are excellent, we decided to sell part of our grapes this year and concentrate on 2024 grapes and present wines. We are expecting great wines from our 2022 harvest.
